This year’s tournament featured two Junior College national champions, with Henry Ford defeating West Valley College 8-0. The team went 3-1 in the best-of-five championship series with West Valley, but came out on top. Devin Stroia scored three goals and Carter Pattenaude ended up with a shutout, turning away 18 shots.
West Valley College
The Henry Ford College roller hockey team won its first national championship on Monday after sweeping the competition against Saddleback College. In the series, the Hawks scored four goals in the first game, including one from Joshua Viller with five seconds left in the second period. The Hawks would win the following three games, including the final one, 8-0. While West Valley was a strong contender throughout the season, it was swept by the Hawks on both days, including the championship game.
The team went on to beat West Valley College in the best-of-five championship series to win the national title in the Junior Division. In the championship final, the HFC Roller Hockey Club won 4 out of 5 games, including two in overtime. The HFC Roller Hockey Club won two of those games on April 9, with the final game a 9-0 victory for the team. The team will play in the NCAA Division III championships this fall.
In their first season together, the team won the regular season and the playoffs, earning an automatic bid to the national tournament. Unfortunately, the team lost to Oswego in the semifinals of the regional tournament due to a pandemic. However, there will be a national championship tournament next year. There are three divisions in the WCRHL, including a Junior College division. The JC Division features five teams, with West Valley and Saddleback advancing to the finals.
